Apples - fruity British business success

If, like most MAXX clients, you have a MAXX calendar on your desk, you will have noticed the beautiful October image which celebrates 2009 as the bicentenary of the Bramley Apple.

The Bramley is grown only in Britain and is a true British business success story…..

Sales of fresh Bramley apples have soared by almost 20% in the past year, which experts put down to an interest in buying locally grown produce (which reduces transport impact on the environment), celebrity chefs using apples more often in “fusion style” cooking and hard-pressed British householders cooking from scratch rather than buying expensive ready meals. Today, some 25,000 tonnes of fresh Bramley apples are sold each year, while a further 58,000 tonnes are used commercially in apple products from pies to sausages and sauces to cider and juice.

Another fruity success story is Apple Crisps run by one of the youngest MD’s in the country. Reading University, Charlie Fermor (22) spotted a gap in the market and started to offer his healthy dried apple treats as a substitute to fried potato snacks. Over 50,000 bags have now been sold in 37 high-end outlets in the southeast and Apple Crisps looking to diversify into cherries and strawberries!

We all know the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away”, and according to the Bramley apple website, this is absolutely based on fact. Bramleys are a powerful source of antioxidants and have been linked to the prevention of lung cancer and type II diabetes. Apples are also high in fibre, which is good for general intestinal health and reducing the risk of heart disease. Cooked apples have also been used for years in traditional medicine to help stop diarrhoea!

So tuck in, get healthy and support British business!
